Laxton Village Hall was built in 1863 by the 3rd Earl Manvers to provide a school for the children of Laxton. The school was transferred to Nottinghamshire LEA in 1904 and continued as a school until its closure in 1947.
It subsequently became a Public Library until 1954 when it was given to the Village as a charitable trust and was managed by the trustees who were all residents of the village.
In 2016 the project to find funding for the refurbishment of the hall began. The whole Village was consulted to seek the support of the residents for the project and to find out what they wanted from their village hall before the application for grant funding was submitted to the National Lottery.
On 10th August 2017 we were delighted to be awarded a grant of £203,499 by the National Lottery and a matched startup grant of £10,000 from the Architectural Heritage Fund.
After much work in designing and planning the refurbishment as well as dealing with legal matters relating to the transfer of ownership to a newly created Charitable Incorporated Organisation, the construction phase of the refurbishment began in February 2019. It was completed in July of that year followed by a period of re-equipping and fitting-out which culminated in the official re-opening on 8th February 2020.
